Before you work with a reading passage in class, it's helpful to begin with a general discussion on the topic of the passage. You can ask questions related to the students' lives, experiences, and opinions. Then pre-teach any new vocabulary that you feel may be difficult for the students. Write the word on the board, and pronounce it for students to repeat. Explain the meaning using examples, a drawing, and explanation in English, or a translation in the students' language. Have students look at the passage they're about to read, considering the title, pictures, and first sentence and last sentence. Ask, What will this reading talk about?
